Totem Quest
In more ways than one, Totem Quest is match-3 with a twist. Games with a twist often tend to break out of their genres to become something more, than just another game.
You are requested by an elder to journey on a quest to recover the ancient family totems. They are all over the region and must be recovered. They can be found deep within the forest, inside caves, by waterfalls, and even in the deserts. You play a game of match-3 in order to uncover parts of the totem. When the entire totem is uncovered, you are then allowed to continue the story.
Totem Quest puzzle pieces when properly position, lining up their slots and tabs they interlock when you have 3 or more. They will hold in place for a few seconds giving you a chance to connect more pieces before the pieces are blow apart and disappear.
Getting rid of the chains in turn gets rid of plaques beneath. Getting rid of two chains of the same color in sequence will afford you one of a number of power-ups. These range from bombs that clear an area of pieces and plaques to a power-up that turns pieces in the vicinity the same color. The potency of these power-ups can be increased by collecting gems caught inside some of the puzzle pieces.
Once you’ve fully uncover a totem, you will be presented with a mini-game to finish. In one, you need to catch gems as the fall from the top of the screen, much like the classic game Kapow. In another, you have to “shoot” puzzle pieces as they fly across the screen, unlocking the gems that they hold, much like clay pigeons in a trap shoot. While interesting diversions, they are ultimately not the most important part of the game.
The developers “CTXM” actually included a well-written story line to go along with the game. While most stories are there primarily to serve the progression through levels of the game (and this one is no different), some can actually stand on their own based on idea, style, and writing style.
This game it not one of those “Just another match-3 puzzle games” situations. It is unique, well crafted, with excellent graphics. The audio blends in very nicely as the game proceeds. The story line is addictive and pulls you in to experience the world of the game. This game is one you should try, and remember I warned you, it can become addictive.
